head, pate, bald, so Irish, Early Irish calb; from Latin calva, scalp, calvus, bald. H.S.D. gives as a meaning "promontory", and instances "Aoineadh a' Chailbh Mhuilich", which surely must be the Calf of Mull; and Calf is a common name for such subsidiary isles - from Norse kálfr, English calf. Cognate with Latin calva, calvaria (St. Lec.).
